Too much personality for an Accountant ...

Numbers and Nonsense

In 2002 I wasn’t a “normal" bookkeeper because I had some qualifications (an accounting degree with no inclination to be a “normal" accountant chucking out tax returns). Back then I really struggled to educate clients about the value of me versus the $25 per hour bookkeeper in the local paper - yeah remember when newspapers were a thing.

But in 2010 the Federal Government helped me out by making qualifications for bookkeepers mandatory through the Tax Agents Services Act 2009 (TASA). TASA now reflected what I and other professions - by upskilling and networking - had been doing for decades, but I still didn’t feel “normal” in bookkeeping circles.

Then at a networking event a builder said, “are you sure you are an Accountant? You have too much personality for an Accountant.”

So there is was. Clients aren’t expecting their accounting professional to have a personality. So lets have a talk about why my personality is actually an asset to my job AND your business.

Bookkeeping shouldn't just be compliance work like getting the payroll and BAS done, a bookkeeper with personality brings a unique blend of skills that not only ensures your financial records are in order but also adds value to your business in various ways.

The Human Touch in Numbers

Numbers can seem cold and impersonal, but when managed by someone with personality, they can tell a story. A bookkeeper who understands this brings a human touch to the data. They don’t just see figures; they comprehend the narrative behind them. They might spot trends, inconsistencies, or opportunities that a purely analytical mind might miss.

Communication and Relationship Building

A bookkeeper who possesses great communication skills and a vibrant personality can foster stronger relationships. They can interact effectively with clients, vendors, and other stakeholders. Their ability to explain financial matters in layman's terms can bridge the gap between the financial realm and other areas of your business. In my career I have enjoyed talking to Millionaire CEO’s AND employees to bring them something beyond numbers on a page.

Problem-Solving and Creativity

This is why I LOVE software; it’s about problem-solving. A bookkeeper with personality often thinks outside the box to find solutions. They can suggest creative ways to streamline processes, cut costs, or improve cash flow by using your current software OR my broad knowledge of lots of software.

Team Morale and Company Culture

A bookkeeper who brings personality to the table can positively impact team morale. This usually occurs for me with payroll clients when the employee starts communicating to me. They don’t see me as “their boss” so they often confide in me about their job and a lot more

Adaptability and Technological Fluency

Did I say I LOVE software ... not sure if it is because I am old enough to have done ledgers in big green ledger books or the fact that I like learning. But I find my personality serves being in today’s adaptable and “into tech” era. I will never tell you what software you have to have, and am always happy to learn more to streamline processes, increase efficiency, and provide real-time insights into your business’s financial health. But if you want software advice, I'm always happy to offer suggestions.

Conclusion

The right bookkeeper can be a linchpin for your business, and one with personality can truly be a catalyst for growth. When seeking a bookkeeper, consider not just their technical skills but also the personality traits that can make them a valuable asset to your business.

Don’t settle just because your accountant or a friend recommended them, find the bookkeeper that is right for your personality. After all, bookkeepers with personality are looking for clients that are right for them too.
