Routine - Training Hard Makes Race Day Easy

Numbers and Nonsense

Running a business can be exhilarating, but it can also be chaotic. As a business owner, you wear many hats—managing operations, keeping up with finances, and ensuring customer satisfaction, all while steering the business toward growth. While this may sound exciting, the constant juggling can quickly become overwhelming without structure.

This is where having a routine becomes essential. Running a business is like running a Marathon it won’t happen without CONSISTENT TRAINING. Your business routine is your consistent training to get to the finish line but along the way there will be some really tangible benefits in maintaining a routine

1. Maximizing Productivity

By creating a structure around your day, you can allocate specific blocks of time for tasks that require focus. You avoid getting stuck in reactive mode, where you are constantly responding to urgent matters rather than making progress on your priorities.

For example, setting aside a particular hour for responding to emails or holding meetings ensures that you aren’t distracted throughout the day, allowing more uninterrupted time for deep work. This discipline leads to higher efficiency and greater output.

2. Reducing Decision Fatigue

Every day, business owners face a barrage of decisions, from strategic planning to everyday problem-solving. Over time, this can lead to decision fatigue—a state where the quality of your decisions declines as your mental energy gets depleted.

Routines can mitigate this by eliminating unnecessary decisions. When you know how your day is structured, you don’t waste time figuring out when to start a task or what to focus on next. Decisions like what time to wake up, when to review finances, or how to structure your meetings become automatic, freeing up mental space for higher-level decisions.

3. Creating Work-Life Balance

Owning a business often means work can easily bleed into personal time. Establishing routines allows you to define clear boundaries between work and personal life. Whether it’s having a set time to start and finish your workday or blocking off time for family and relaxation, routines help ensure you don’t burn out by working endlessly.

This balance is critical for long-term success. A well-rested and mentally refreshed business owner is far more likely to make effective decisions and drive the business forward than one constantly on the brink of burnout.

4. Consistency Leads to Growth

Growth in business comes from consistency, and routines allow you to establish this. For instance, a weekly routine of reviewing sales reports or setting aside time to network with potential clients ensures that important tasks don’t slip through the cracks. These actions compound over time, leading to steady business growth.

Whether it’s marketing, sales outreach, or customer service improvements, routines help build momentum, turning small daily efforts into larger, measurable successes.

5. Stress Reduction

Chaos breeds stress, stress invokes flight or fight responses, flight for fight responses channel blood to your extremities away from your brain…. My business needs my brain, pretty sure yours does too? Without a routine, business owners can easily feel like they’re constantly chasing after the next thing. By having a structured routine, you bring order to the chaos, which naturally reduces stress levels. Knowing what’s coming next in your day creates a sense of control and calm so your brain has enough blood to work..

Moreover, a routine can include time for stress-relieving activities like exercise, meditation, or even short breaks, helping you stay grounded amidst the daily pressures of business ownership.

6. Better Team Management

As a business owner, your team looks to you for guidance and leadership. Having a routine not only helps you manage your own tasks but also allows you to lead by example. When your routine is predictable and consistent, your team knows when and how to approach you for guidance. It also helps them establish their own routines, creating a more organized and efficient work environment.

Additionally, having regular check-ins or meetings as part of your routine ensures that communication flows smoothly and that you can address any concerns before they escalate. I have a standing calendar task to check what work I have given to my employees each week and what they have completed, because LDG is remote first it is my first little bench mark at how I check in with my employees.

7. Adaptability Through Structure

Ironically, having a routine makes you more adaptable. While that might seem counterintuitive, it’s true. When you have a clear structure in place, you can more easily identify where flexibility is needed. If unexpected events arise, it’s easier to make adjustments to your day without feeling overwhelmed.

A routine gives you the foundation to remain calm and focused when things go off-plan because you know you have a system to fall back on. And this is me to a tee…. The harder I stick to my routine the more I actually achieve.

In business, unpredictability is often the only constant. However, a well-structured routine can serve as an anchor in the sea of uncertainty, allowing you to navigate challenges with focus and clarity. Routines boost productivity, reduce stress, and create consistency—leading to long-term growth and success. For business owners, establishing a daily routine is not a luxury, it’s a necessity for thriving in both work and life. Again a small business is a marathon not a sprint. When I did complete a marathon last year it was only from being committed to a rigid training schedule, literally work and my social life was less important than my running program last year. Even when I got injured 2.5 weeks before race day I was able to pivot, deal with the injury AND complete the marathon because of the solid base of Consistent training. Ironically or not my business has also doubled in a year in turnover.

By taking control of your time through a routine, you can better steer your business toward success while also ensuring that you maintain a healthy balance in your personal life to achieve whatever goals you are ready to smash.
